What to Know About 1970s Fashion

If you love the 1970s and its style, then you are in luck. Here’s a brief look at the fashion trends of the decade. From fringed suede miniskirts to the ever-popular T-shirts, the 1970s was a time when fashion was anything but simple.

Women’s 1970s fashion

The 1970s were a time of change in women’s fashion. Instead of the classic silhouette, women were now wearing a looser, sexier, and more comfortable dress. In the fall and winter, full-length figure-hugging tops and short sleeved tops competed for attention, but in the summer, white became the color of choice. Cable knit cardigan sweaters were also popular, often with a tie belt to close them. They were worn with a matching knit shirt. Women often wore a knit poncho to keep warm, or a homemade one.

The wide-leg pants of the 1970s were made of polyester or cotton knit. They were very popular, and they mimicked the look of the 1940s. In addition, many women wore high-waisted pants that had a flat front and a high-rise. Some women wore pleated-front pants.

Women’s fashion during the 1970s also included a wide range of dresses. A mini-sweater dress was a popular choice for the evening, and empire-line dresses were another common style. Halterneck dresses were also popular, and could be either maxi-length or slightly above the knee. Women also wore hot pants, or mini dresses, during disco dance parties. They often wore oversized collars and hippie prints.

In addition to the power suits, many women wore jumpsuits. These versatile garments were more comfortable than dresses, and were made of double-knit polyester or cotton. They were also made with pant pockets. Jumpsuits in the ’70s were often flared at the legs and topped with bell sleeves. Sleeveless versions were popular as well.

The 1970s marked a period when women took back control of their personhood. Fashion no longer came from New York or Paris; it was influenced by the needs of everyday women. Women needed to make small changes to their wardrobes to stay current. The mini skirt was replaced by a midi skirt.

The era also saw a return to nature and anti-Vietnam-War themes. Hippie clothes, like the ’70s versions, became popular. People began looking for designers that matched the styles of the time.

Men’s 1970s fashion

Men’s 1970s fashion was anything but conservative. Colorful outfits teamed high-waisted pants with oversized shirts and flashy jewelry. Many men also wore silk neck scarves that were tied in a square knot. Large bowties were also a popular choice. Men also wore jumpsuits for discos and other parties. Some men even had afros.

The 1970s were also the decade when black men had a little more freedom to wear what they wanted. Double-breasted suits and crushed velvet suits were popular, as were satin shirts worn unbuttoned at night. Cropped jackets were another popular style during this decade. They usually button down with three to five buttons, and the buttons are often made of leather. Cropped jackets typically end below the knee.

The 1970s were a free time for fashion, with many styles and looks to choose from. You can use photos from the decade to determine the vintage date of your outfit and the type of lifestyle that you lived in during the time. And if you’re planning a 1970s themed party, be sure to know what kind of clothing is appropriate.

In the seventies, young men started dressing in unconventional ways, including mixing bright colors. These outfits were dubbed the peacock revolution. Peacock outfits often included satin shirts, ruffles, turtlenecks, and Cuban heeled boots. Also popular were peacock suits in bright colors. The double-breasted suit was also popular during the 1970s, often in crushed velvet or corduroy.

Turtleneck shirts were another favorite among men during the decade. Typically, these shirts featured a wide rolled collar, and men wore them with short-sleeved dress shirts. Some had contrasting colors and tie-dyed fabrics. During the 1970s, men also began to wear button-down dress shirts with ties. Many men also opted for paisley patterns and contrasting colors.

Men’s 1970s fashion featured a variety of trousers. Typical trousers were made of polyester, which lends itself well to the creation of trousers. These pants could be long or short. They were often printed in bold plaids. In the later decade, trousers became accepted for business situations.
